Object Description

This most unusual set of 4 crested early George III silver candlesticks were made in London 2 in 1765 and 2 in 1766 by Thomas Hannam and John Crouch and measure just under 1q1.5 inches tall by almost 5 inches in dia across the quatrefoil base, they are most unusual in design the columns are quatrefoil with acanthus leaf decoration above the base and towards the top where there are scrolls, flower heads and further acanthus leaves around the bowl and there are also 5 bands with reeded edges on the columns, the detachable columns have gadrooned borders and are hallmarked with the lion passant in varying degrees of clarity – the bases of the sticks have an unusual pattern with each lobe holding an unusual design with scroll and leaf borders. The sticks are fully hallmarked to the bases and the underside of the bases are wooden, they have crests to the centre of the columns and also to the sconces and are in very good condition – a very unusual and eye catching design to grace any home.
