Object Description

Unusually small 18th century George III period mahogany bachelor’s antique chest of drawers. This chest of drawers is made of very good close grained mahogany of the sort favoured by the best makers of the period. Although it small it it very heavy to lift, a testament to the quality of the timber. It has attained a very good deep colour during its long life and now it just needs a thorough beeswaxing in our workshops to restore a wonderful natural shine. This chest of drawers is a very fine example of this period of furniture making and the 18th century is regarded by many as being the best period of English furniture manufacture. Restrained but well made, the beauty of this piece is its simplicity of design, carefully ordered proportions, choice of the best timber and its fantastic construction. The top is moulded, the drawers are of the pre-cockbeaded design and there is a brushing slide. Narrow front to back this piece is small enough to provide useful storage in a small space in a bedroom while also being a fine enough piece to grace a formal drawing room.
