Object Description

A stylish pair of vintage gold and diamond earrings by Van Cleef & Arpels c.1979, each formed of a square cushion-shaped panel in 18ct yellow gold positioned point to point on the diagonal and set with nine round brilliant cut diamonds in three rows and surrounded by a gold rope twist frame, above which the top two sides have a further two rows of gold rope twist which are wider than the frame, all to post and clip fittings. These are a lovely wearable pair of earrings, suitable for day and evening, the diamonds are high quality, bright, lively and well matched. The rope twist gives them a casual air whilst the diamonds create impact and the unusual shape is very flattering on the ear with the top of the earrings pointing upwards and following the line of the outer edge of the ear.
When viewed from the side, the earrings have a three dimensional ‘stacked’ appearance. The outer row of rope twist is at the lowest level (closest to the ear when worn) with each subsequent row overlapping and sitting higher until the diamond plaque is at the top thereby creating volume and visual interest. Overall, an elegant and versatile pair of French vintage earrings by one of the finest jewellery houses.
