Object Description

Very large green and parcel gilt glass chandelier by F&C Osler, 19th Century
English, Late 19th Century
Dimensions: Height 250cm, diameter 180cm

Brimming with opulence, this large and impressive chandelier is filled with decadent details. The chandelier was crafted by F & C Osler, and represents the pinnacle of English glassmaking. Established in Birmingham in 1807, Osler became known as one of the most prestigious firms internationally, gaining commissions from aristocracy and royalty all over the world.

The chandelier is made from green glass with parcel gilt detailing. There are two tiers of individual lights that sit atop of branching curled arms, with the bottom tier holding twenty light fixtures of alternating heights, and the top holding five. The lights take the form of slender hurricane lamp shades, which are superbly decorated with gilt foliate motifs around the base and apex. From the bottom of the shades hang green and clear glass droplets, which feature delicate etching.

Of baluster form, the central stem of the chandelier is skilfully decorated with green, white and gilt enamel, in an Anglo-Indian style. This ‘Mughal style’, which brings together English and Indian design, was particularly popular among the noble families of India in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Fusing the design styles of two different continents, this magnificent chandelier is expertly crafted and filled with fine details, and would make an excellent addition to the appropriate interior.
