This very nice quality provincial George III silver 2 handled cup and cover was made in York in 1791 by Hampton and Prince and measures 12.5 inches tall by 9 1/8 inches handle to handle and is 5.5inches in dia across the top and almost 4.5 across the base. The base rim and top rim are reeded as are the handles and to the front it has a shield shaped cartouche bearing the inscription TO R.P.TODD ESQ OF STURMER HALL ESSEX AND TO HIS SON AFTER HIM A MEMORIAL OF REGARD & FRIENDSHIP FROM EDWARD TOPHAM A.D.1792. The shield has a garland of belle flowers over the top leading from a bow and the pull off lid has an acorn finial atop. It is fully and clearly hallmarked under the base and to the lid rim with the added benefit of the town mark. A super cup and cover in excellent condition weighing 36.10 ounces or 1123 grams.
