Biography – Gorham Silver of Providence, Rhode Island, was founded in 1831 by Jabez Gorham in partnership with Henry L Webster. His son John succeeded him in 1847, a man of great foresight, who mechanised production, expanded the premises and improvised the designs, bringing in highly skilled workmen under the new premier designer and workshop manager George Wilkinson, hired from England. In 1905 the company opened a showroom on the prestigious Fifth Avenue, New York City. Gorham became a highly influential manufacturing company fulfilling many commissions from the White House and manufacturing major trophies such as the America’s Cup for yachting, the Davis cup for tennis and the Borg-Warner trophy for the Indianapolis 500. In 1967 the company was purchased by Textron, in 1991 it was purchased by brown-Forman Corporation and in 2005 it was sold to Department 56 in the Lenox holdings.
