(Often there debate over whether miniature furniture was made
as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who is looking
for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase
their talents, or whether it was made as a travelling salesman
sample piece, which is when a few articles were made as
scale models in advance of a road trip on which the salesman
would travel the country showing prospective clients
the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and
take orders from. This beautiful piece was almost certainly made
as a travelling salesman sample due it being quite rare to find
a miniature bureau, especially of this stature which incorporates
this level of detail, right down to the sliding well cover. It is also
worth noting that this item is extremely untouched in terms of
condition and retains its original brass as well as a beautiful
warm colour and patina. There are locks to then bottom drawer
and fall but these are no longer operational due to many years
of not being used and the feet are probably replacements, but
very much in the style of the originals. This is an incredibly
beautiful and collectable piece and exactly the sort of item
which given the chance I would love to keep for
my own collection!)
