| LAPADA member David Messum Fine Art’s major exhibition, showcasing new works by the famed sculptor Guy Taplin, is now open.
Taplin‘s bird sculptures embody our longed-for harmony with the natural world. His obsession with birds extends beyond their beauty to their endurance, intuition and symbolic loyalty. Mostly depicting shorebirds of various species, each sculpture captures the specific habits and character of its subject. Through simplified, stylised forms, Taplin seems to breathe each bird’s very essence.
Sculpted from found driftwood, which he forages from coasts and estuaries around the world, Taplin‘s birds are imbued with the history of their materials. Weathered by time and the elements, each piece of wood bears unique marks that enhance his designs, suggesting the outline of a wing or layers of plumage.
