17th Century Antique Silkwork Applique. The applique has hand-stitched silkwork slips/motifs, sewn onto a silk ground. These decorative elements were embroidered separately before being cut out and affixed to the main fabric, creating a richly textured and dimensional effect. A wonderful set of slips are applied, including: a central female figure holding flowers, the sun emerging from a cloud, birds, flowers, rabbits, dogs, snails, a lion, a leopard, a cockerel, caterpillars, etc. Framed in an elaborate, old, gilded wooden frame with glass. The silkwork panel is stitched to a light backing material.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
