Object Description

17thC Religious Silkwork Embroidery Picture. The embroidery is very finely worked in silks on a silk ground. The picture depicts Mary cradling baby Jesus, who holds a dove. They are stood on a plinth, underneath a canopy. Surrounded by flowers. The piece is partly worked in metal thread in a variety of stitches. Metal flower sequins are scattered around the picture. Text at the bottom hard to read, possibly, ‘N.S.OPILAR’. Framed in an modern hogarth-effect wooden frame with glass. The embroidery has been glued to a board and backed with chipboard.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Object Condition

Generally good. Some patchy staining in places. Some missing petals on the metal flowers. Small hole. Small split on left hand side.
