Object Description

1812 Sampler by Susannah Roberts. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Tacked to board with brown paper. The sampler is worked in silk and silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering floral border. Colours olive green, light green, dark green, cream, blue, light brown, dark brown, white, black, pink and gold. Verse entitled ‘THOU GOOD SUPREME’ reads’O teach me what is good teach me>THYSELF Save me from folly vanity and>Vice from evry low pursuit and feed my>Soul with conscious peace and virtue pure>Sacred substantial never fading bliss’. Signed and dated ‘Susannah Roberts 1812’. A good set of motifs, including a castle with a garden, birds, angels, a stag, a dog, a fir tree, a blossoming tree, a windmill and butterflies.

Object Condition

Good. A few small holes. A number of pale stain specks to the border and some age darkening of the backing linen. Stitch losses to the border and to the border around the signature. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing some wear and a chip, but structurally sound.
