18th Century Italian Cartouche-Shaped Giltwood Wall Mirror

Object Description

An early 18th century giltwood mirror, with a shaped plate contained within a cartouche shaped frame, carved with a rich array of scrolling patterns, acanthus leaves and detailed floral carvings. The cresting pierced displaying a C-shaped surmount with rocailles. On scrolled feet, the bottom rail centered by a symmetric leave ornament. The lavish generous carving relates to the generous size of almost 3 feet 10 inches height.

Object History

Stylistically the mirror’s shape and its ornaments relate to the late Baroque period, gilding probably later, original gilding left on the back. Mirror plate with some minor corrosion.
