Object Description

A Charming George III Period Mahogany Wardrobe Of Channel
Islands Design Having Superbly Figured Fielded Panelled Doors
Enclosing Brass Hanging Rail Retaining Excellent Rich Colour And
Patina Throughout Raised On Original Ogee Feet

(Channel Island wardrobes were inspired by the French Armoire, but made
in the English style of the period and they were intentionally made for ease
of moving and installation from one part of a house to another. You start by
lifting the cornice off and this then allows the 2 panelled chestnut backboards
to be unscrewed from the sides. The doors can then be removed at the hinges
and this allows the sides to simply lift out of the base. Once these steps are
followed it allowed the wardrobe to be installed in even the smallest of houses
with the tightest of staircases. It is then very easy to reassemble in reverse as
everything simply slots into place and the back panels are fixed with a few
screws.

This particular wardrobe retains an excellent untouched colour and patina which
gives it a real warmth – It is also not overpoweringly large like many of these
which we have come across and should fit into comfortably into the rooms of
any type of house. It is also nice that it retains its original ogee feet and overall
its in pretty good condition.)
