Object Description

A Very Attractive And Good Quality Late 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Torchere, Or Candle Stand, Having Well Figured Detachable Circular Top With Moulded Rim, Over Elegant Turned Stem With Fluted Decoration, Terminating On Three Splayed Tripod Legs.

The actual definition of a torchere is a lamp on a tall stand made of wood or metal. However these days any kind of tall antique table, or stand, upon which a lamp or candlesticks may have been placed upon tends to be referred to as a torchere. Alternatively you will sometimes hear an item like this referred to as a candle stand, the reason for which doesn’t really need explaining obviously.

This particular example is very good quality, dating to the late 18th century, probably made in the Netherlands. As well as their own unique, elaborate styles of furniture, there were many Dutch craftsman copying English georgian designs and styles of furniture towards the end of the 18th century.

A useful little item there is a wide variety of spaces around the home which this georgian table would come in extremely useful, as well as looking incredibly elegant.

As with all items which we offer for sale this lovely little item has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers where it has been inspected and recieved a good clean plus a natural wax polish.
