Object Description

A wonderful late 18th Century North Italian Walnut and Marquetry Commode of superb original colour, sold by Franklin of Brompton Rd and formerly property of Quida the famous Victorian novelist.

North Italian Lombardy Region circa 1780.

The banded and inlaid rectangular moulded edge top, quarter veneered with choice cuts of figured walnut having a inlaid flower motif medallion to the centre. Sits over four graduated long drawers inlaid with scrolling foliage swags and garlands, a flower basket and grotesque mask within moulded curved front corners and conforming sides, on the original tapering legs.

The drawers delightfully retaining their original paper lining having an note inside stating the commode was formally part of the Franklin collection (dealers in Brompton Rd London) and was formerly the property of the famous Victorian novelist Ouida. Ouida was the pseudonym of the English Novelist Maria Louise Rame (January 1839 – January 1908). She wrote over 40 novels and spent a some of her later years living in Italy.

A fine commode of excellent colour along with good provenance.
