Object Description
A Fine Quality Late 18th Century George III Period
Mahogany Oval Wine Cooler, Or Cellarette, Having
Very Well Figured Hinged Lid Enclosing Lead Lined
Interior With Bottle Divisions And Brass Bound Decoration
With Original Brass Handles To Outside Raised On Elegant
Square Tapered Legs With Original Brass Castors
(This wine cooler is a little bolder than we often find and
also boasts exceptional quality and construction. It retains
its original brass bound decoration and handles and really
is a great example fo its type. It is also slightly different to
the norm in terms of being raised on fixed legs, as opposed
to being housed on a detachable stand which is more
commonly the case. It also retains a wonderful rich,
untouched colour and patina. The lead lining is original
as is the plug but it is very unlikely these remain watertight
to this day due to the natural movement of the wood
beneath over the course of many hundreds of years. Should
you wish to use it for it’s original purpose though it would
be relatively easy and inexpensive to have a replacement
liner made which could drop in over the top of the
original one and be watertight.)
