Object Description

An original 18th century silvered and carved pine eagle, circa 1780.

Likely once used as an architectural pediment, this architectural eagle ornament is a testament to popular neoclassical styling of the period. It is deeply carved in relief, details of the eagle with wings outspread still clear and distinguishable after more than 240 years.

At the same time, it shows its age with an attractive timeworn look, and distressed gilding in areas that only adds to its unique beauty.

A hook to the back allows this eagle sculpture to be attached to a wall, looking particularly striking situated above a mantelpiece or as a feature piece of wall decoration in a drawing room, office or hallway.

Provenance: Ossowski, Pimlico Road

Object Condition

Good structural condition. bracket. Silvered finish which is retouched in places. particularly the beak. No obvious repairs. Very minor losses. Rubbing to gilding. Bracket for wall hanging to reverse.
