This charming painting of a blonde youth sitting beside a rocky shoreline, on the island of Örno close to Stockholm on the Baltic Sea, is by the Swedish artist Gustaf Magnusson. It is painted in an Impressionistic manner with free, broad brushstrokes.
Gustaf Magnusson was born in Stockholm in 1890. He was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1908-1914 and from 1920-1922 he undertook a study trip to Germany and Italy.
Both as a painter and graphic artist, Magnusson represented a restrained realism with a fine sense of colour and decorative form. Magnusson’s work is represented at the Nationalmuseum, Moderna Museet and the Kalmar Art Museum, all in Sweden.
