Object Description

These two beautiful chests in black lacquer were made by the designer Lorin Jackson in the 1940s for the celebrated New York furniture company Grosfeld House, whose metal plaque can be seen inside the drawers. Serving as a wonderful reminder that the Hollywood Regency style was not limited to the West Coast of the United States, Grosfeld House made playful, inventive and stylish pieces for opulent East Coast homes. The subtle curve across the face of each chest is gently flattened, almost to a set designer’s facade, boldly presented in black lacquer for a lavish yet careful silhouette. A brilliant illustration of how Hollywood Regency furniture teasingly referenced the manner of earlier styles, with makers such as Lorin Jackson and Grosfeld House cleverly updating them for the lavish comfort of eclectic and glamorous interiors.
