Object Description
19th century Bohemian engraved glass goblet and cover
Bohemian, Late 19th Century
Height 29cm, diameter 10cm
This exquisite Bohemian goblet is crafted from finely detailed engraved and cut glass. Renowned for its superior quality and innovative designs, Bohemian glass is highly esteemed worldwide, making this antique a prized addition to any collection.
The goblet’s upper bowl is adorned with intricate engravings that depict a variety of scenes, quotations, and decorative patterns. It features three circular motifs, each illustrated to complement the quote above it. The finely detailed engravings include representations of, for example, facial expressions, highlighting the exceptional skills of Bohemian craftsmen. The three quotes are as follows: ‘nim wohlin acht die redte seit’ (be cautious of what has been said), ‘verlaum nicht die gelegenheit’ (don’t let opportunities pass by), and ‘sonltwird diezhat zu spat bereit’ (otherwise, it will be too late). Between each quote, a bowl of fruits and plants is engraved, possibly symbolising abundance.
Atop the goblet sits a cut-glass cover, featuring a band of circles and additional engraved detailing. The handle of the cover mirrors the design of the goblet’s base, which rests on a flat, circular platform.
This remarkable antique piece not only boasts timeless beauty but also serves as a functional and elegant addition to any home décor or table setting.
