Object Description

The gilt-bronze statue of a nude youthful Dionysus standing on his right leg. In contrapposto position sculpted with a well-defined musculature. The head is bent down with a contemplative gaze. He wears a crown of ivy and has a fawn-skin knotted over his left shoulder. The high-laced leather boots with great detail. The figure stands atop a bronze base.

Object History

After an original bronze excavated, 1862 in Pompeii, sometimes also known as Narcissus due to his contemplative downward gaze. A very decorative hollow bronze cast with a faded and worn gilt-bronze surface that displays a beautiful patina.
The sculpture originates from the late 19th century, a possible souvenir from the ‘grand Tour’, a token of the enthusiasm for neo-classical culture of the time.
