Object Description

A Very Attractive Mid 19th Century Victorian Period Giltwood And Gesso Overmantel Mirror, Of Good Proportions, Having Triple Sectioned Old Mirror Plates, Bordered By Half Turned Columns With Elegant Foliate Carved Decoration.

This elegant overmantel mirror is slightly taller than the typical overmantel mirror designs which you find throughout the Regency and Victorian periods. This lends it to being suitable for a few more spaces, as the extra little bit of height certainly helps add proportion to a room.

It would be fair to say that the gilding is well worn and at some point it has been overpainted. Largely however that pain has now been stripped, or worn away now, leaving a rather nice worn got finish, as opposed to the incredibly bright pure gilt finishes which can sometimes be found on these items. The mirror plates are old and could well be original as they have a little wear to them, but we are not certain that they are original.

As the name suggests overmantle mirrors were made to sit on, or just above the mantelpiece in large Georgian, Regency and Victorian homes. They were nearly always low and wide so as to fill the space in an attractive, but not overpowering fashion. They come in many different shapes, designs, sizes and qualities and this is nice example of its type for the period.

As with all of our stock this item has been cleaned and polished in the traditional fashion within our workshops by our skilled and experienced craftsman before being offered for sale, meaning it is ready to go straight into the home.
