Object Description

A charming japanned tripod table with mother-of-pearl inset painted top depicting a fox hunting scene with horse riders in traditional hunt outfits with dogs on the chase. The painted top is attached to the baluster shaft which rests on a tripod Stand with scrolled feet, the whole decorated with black japanning and gilt decoration.

Object History

Tripod tables were used for the service of tea, japanned surface decoration were particular popular as it reflects the source of the tea. The combination of oriental-inspired decoration combined with European-style oil painting was an innovation in the art of lacquer introduced in the mid-18th century by the Martin Brothers in Paris. The shape and decoration of this table shows the influence of 18th century French styles on 19th century designers and makers.
