Object Description

A magnificent 19th century Regence/ Louis XV style writing table or bureau plat of serpentine form. The leather top writing surface banded by gilt bronze borders above a frieze with three shaped drawers on the front and matching blind drawers on the back. Raised on cabriole legs headed by acanthus cast mounts and foliate motifs which follow the outline of the leg to the feet, terminating in scrolling foliate sabots. The oak carcase with a marquetry of tulipwood and kingwood with fine banding framing the veneered panels.

Object History

The overall design follows the work of one of the most important ébéniste of the 18th century, Jacques Dubois (1694-1763). He is particularly noted for his bureau „Choiseul“, part of the Louvre collection H is use of exuberant gilt bronze mounts, which mark a transition between the Régence and later rocaille forms, is reflected in our model.
