An Extremely Attractive And Very Well Carved 19th Century Painted And Gilded Oval Wall Mirror, With Original Sectioned Mirror Plates Enclosed Within Elegant Carved Borders, With Good Carved C Scrolls And Foliage To Top.
This particulalry decorative mirror is really rather attractive. Almost certainly made towards the mid to late 19th century, it has been executed in the 18th century style, but has much richer and better carving than most of the copies which we find from this period.
It has been very deliberately painted and then gilded over the top of the pain to create a mellow, gilt highlighted effect. This has been accentuated by the many years of rubbing and natural wear to the gilded surface, resulting in the paint wash from beneath showing more prominently in some places than others. This creates an extremely pleasing effect to look at.
In terms of condition there are various old marks, digs, breaks and scuffs as one would expect.We also believe the mirror plates themselves to be original, certainly they are old at the very least, but most probably original.
We have tried to highlight anything of consequence in the item listings images and there are no major structural defects or issues which are likely to cause any problems with the solidity of the piece. This is includes the large crack to the frame on the left hand side, which has been assessed by our restorers and deemed to be a very old, repaired break which is no longer an issue. Therefore it is very much solid and ready for immediate placement.
