Object Description

A Very Attractive Regency Period Gilt Gesso Pier Mirror Having Elegant Verre Églomisé Panel To Top, Over Old Mirror Plate Enclosed By Half Turned, Reeded Columns Wrapped With Foliate Carved Decoration Headed By Further Foliate Carving.

This 19th century gilt mirror has real elegance and is just the right size to have a presence in just about any space it is utilised, without being overpoweringly large and therefore requiring a very specific spot for it to be hung in.

It remains in good condition with just the expected old marks, scuffs, scrapes and repairs commensurate with an item of this age. Certainly there is nothing visually distracting, or disturbing in that respect. It sports an old mirror plate, which has just a few old marks, but it is unlikely to be original as the condition is almost certainly too good for that.

There is also an absolutely beautiful verre églomisé panel to the top. Verre églomisé is a French term referring to the process of applying both a design and gilding onto the rear face of glass to produce a mirror finish and nearly always adds a real touch of class and sophistication wherever it is used.

The term “Pier” mirror is generally used to describe an antique mirror whose proportions are relatively tall and narrow. As the name suggests this is because they were originally made to hang on the brick piers between the windows of a room.
