Object Description
A Quite Exceptional Quality Late 19th Century Satinwood Pair Of Bedside Chests, Or Bedside Night Tables, Having Superbly Figured Veneers And Attractive Crossbanded Decoration Throughout, The Top Sections With Two Drawers, Over Four Further Further Drawers Below, All Veneered To The Inside With Attractive Birds Eye Maple Wood, Having Replacement Brass Handles, Raised On Plinth Bases With Concealed Castors.
This really unusual pair of bedside tables are some of the best quality in terms of their construction and timbers used that we have had for quite some time. The satinwood veneers are beautiful, highly figured with lovely rays flowing through them and they retain a gorgeous roch colour. Also, incredibly unusually the interior of the drawers are all veneered with beautiful birdseye maple wood, which is something we have very rarely seen before and really demostrates the overall quality of these chests.
Perfect for either side of a bed they offer lots of storage and a couple of different height surfaces which one can use to rest items on.
Overall the condition of the chests is excellent with very little historic damage or repairs to speak of. Although it should be noted that on each cabinet at the bottom the inside plinth is not cross banded like the front and outside plinth, so these may be old replacements. That said the wood is identical to what is used throughout the rest of the chests and therefore it is possible that the original cabinet maker just never crossbanded those pieces of plinth. Either way one certainly does not notice the lack of banding in this location without extremely close inspection.
The brass handles are replaced, but they sit extremely well on the chests and are along the lines of what would have been in place originally so work really well.
As with all items which we offer for sale this pair of bedside chests have been inspected in our workshops by our skilled antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale, which ensures they are in their optimum condition and ready for immediate placement following purchase.
