Object Description

The bust length portrait of a bearded gentleman, possibly a cleric, sensitively executed, the sitter having a full chestnut bushy beard and looking out towards the viewer, painted in oils on canvas to a dark ground, presented in seventeenth century dress with a mitre conical type headdress and pronounced white collar, the work presented in a unframed and unrestored, and surviving from the third quarter of nineteenth century Holland.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

A portrait that would benefit perhaps from further research and a gloriously decorative one in the meantime.

Object Condition

The picture remains in original though unrestored condition with no over-painting and some craquelure and paint fleck loss to the surface; with one larger area of loss to the forehead; please refer to the photographs for a visual reference. He remains well painted and very decorative. There is a taped repair to the reverse and an old framers label for “GT Dimmocks, fine art galleries, framing and gilding establishment, 66 london st, Norwich”. They are listed as operating in July 1883. It is interesting the work is probably Dutch but it was relined and framed in Norwich.
