Object Description

Circa 1860. Mid Victorian mahogany 2-part secretaire military chest by G. Kane, Dame St., Dublin in exceptional condition. The top with its original brass corners and strapping over four small and one large central secretaire drawer with inset military handles and Bramah locks stamped VR. The secretaire with a gilt leather writing surface embossed with G. Kane, Maker, 68 – 69 Dame St., Dublin. Beneath is a full-length drawer with ash linings. The separate base with two matching long drawers and all supported on neat turned bun feet.

Gregory Kane was a cabinet and leather luggage maker at 68 -69 Dame St., between 1847 and 1887. He won a number of exhibition medals for his quality workmanship. He claimed that his furniture, some made for the colonial service, was as good as that of any London cabinetmaker!
