Object Description

A fine “model 510” Black Forest shelf cuckoo clock, made by Johann Baptiste Beha, Germany, for Camerer, Kuss & Co. , dating from the 1880s.

The architectural walnut case has a repeating carved fleur de lys trim above the gable, and well carved Gothic arches and a frieze of scrolling leaves around the base.

The wood plated 8-day fusee striking movement has the original leather-covered bellows. The movement cuckoos on the hour and the passing of the half hour, the hour being accompanied by a gong strike.

The wooden dial has applied Roman numerals, and original matching pierced bone hands, which are very intricately carved.

Object History

The sticker on both sides of the back panel is for the retailers, the Anglo-German clockmaking firm Camerer Kuss & Co., at 56 New Oxford Street , London & 2 Broad Street, Bloomsbury, & 186 Uxbridge Road, Shepherds Bush.
