Object Description
Solid Silver Salver with the armourial crest of the Hamilton Family. The crest comprises of a tree and a hand saw with the motto ” Through” This possibly derives from the successful escape of the C14th Gilbert de Hamilton ( a supporter of Robert the Bruce) who defeated capture from the de Spencer family by dressing up as a woodcutter and cutting a tree down helped by his nervous servant whom he distracted by shouting to him the word “through” which was the woodcutters exclamation for “timber” There by avoiding detection. So the crest was born. The 10th Duke of Hamilton (1776-1852) married Susan Euphemia Beckford, she was the grand daugher of the Lord Mayor of London.
