Object Description

A 16th century German cupboard, constructed from oak and finely carved throughout.
Having a heavily molded geometric cornice, below a pair of carved cupboard doors, with scenes relating to Susanna and the elders and the book of Daniel. The doors have a carved inscription ” Historia van Svsanna ” and “Daniel sprack de schonheit hffedibedr 1544 “. In between the doors is a seated female figure probably Sussana, Below is a central romayne head protruding from the cupboard , and flanked by a pair of carved drawers with later linings, the fronts decorated with lions masks and brass ring handles. The edges of the cupboard have carved columns with flow from the top down to the pot board base, again with a heavily molded geometric skirt mirroring the top, which is supported by a large pair of recumbent lions. The sides of the cupboard consist of linenfold panels, both doors have later working locks and separate keys.
The cupboard has superb colour and patination and is in excellent condition.
