Object Description

The life sized unglazed stoneware corbel bracket being finely sculpted with a plinth top over an angelic cherubs head, the whole being in the manner of George Tinworth (1843-1913), and surviving from Victorian England and an ecclesiastical setting.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

George Tinworth (1843-1913) was a Doulton Lambeth artist and designer. He worked on many building projects for Doulton including stone friezes at Sandringham Church, Norfolk, Altarpiece, Pulpit and Font at St Albans Anglican Church 1887 and many other church buildings.

One sees a lot of reproductions of this type of corbel so finding an antique original is very pleasing indeed.

Object Condition

The corbel has a section of loss to one side as photographed. It is heavy and we have added a bracket to the reverse so it can now be wall hung. If wanting to use the top surface as a plinth we would recommend using a pad to the bottom section so as the piece stays straight and flush to the wall. The rest of the piece has small chips and wear commensurate with age, with the cherubs face remaining largely intact., with one chip to the chin.
