Object Description

The beautifully decorative pine and wrought iron rectangular travelling military or naval trunk or chest in its wonderful original peacock blue paint with faint sign-written initials ‘SM’ to the front, the front opening to reveal a vacant interior to iron hinges, strap work and catch and to the flanks and bottom terminating in rather unusual scrolled iron supports and sledge feet for ease of transportation, the whole surviving from mid-Victorian England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

This was possibly a British military carpenters toolbox or used at sea. The struts are a testament to how much travelling it was intended to do with poles to be used through the loops and carried either side.

Perfect for kindling or logs, a beautiful and unique storage option in a simply fantastic colour.

Object Condition

The trunks huge decorative appeal is obviously evident and it is in complete condition with no overpainting. The lettering of SM may well be for sea master.
