Object Description

Formally an architectural opposing side of a fire surround or large piece of furniture, the wonderfully well carved grotesque dolphin with scaled surface and gaping mouth to a stylised forked tail, and on a bed of seaweeds which flow from its mouth, with a later oak top now serving as a side table or pedestal, and surviving from the mid to late nineteenth century.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

Probably once one side of a large fireplace surround or a large piece of furniture such as a breakfront bookcase, the carving is very well executed and more defined than other carvings of this nature.

A unique table that could be used for your wine glass or for displaying your favourite sculpture and one that conjures up the romance of the mighty deep.

Object Condition

The overall patination and colour to the oak is appealing and the ornamentation is softly worn, commensurate with its age and use. There are no areas of loss, with the top having a light bow. She is stable.
