French, 19th Century

Originally by Baccarat, this delightful piece is an opaline glass lamp, retrofitted from a vase, mounted with a pleated shade and painted with floral decoration inspired by the Rococo style. Large floral bursts, deftly painted with a light, expressive touch, feature on the front and reverse, with smaller blossoms interspersed around the vase’s body. The base and a ring around the neck are gilt and the vase is fitted with brass to form a lamp with twin-bulb fixtures.
Baccarat was a French glassmaking firm of international repute, reaching a zenith during the nineteenth century. The use of their wares and the conversion of them into other pieces, such as lamps, is not a uncommon practice, given how highly prized their glass was and has remained.
