Object Description

The very pretty giltwood and gesso console table having an attractively shaped white Carrera marble top above a beautifully rendered rope-twist diaper-carved frieze, to elegant acanthus leaf carved inscrolled cabriole supports, the whole surviving from the third quarter of nineteenth century France in the Louis XVI style.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

The illusion of twisted and knotted rope is often associated with the work of the Parisian upholsterer A. M. E. Fournier, who worked at the Boulevard Beaumarchais, from around 1850 onwards. It is indicative of the mid-19th century’s flair for novelty and this table is an example of that playfulness.

A stunning table that has aged wonderfully well.

Object Condition

The table is in decorative condition and is presented in fair to good overall order. There are some sections of loss to the gesso and giltwood carved elements, which have been colour matched in; please see the photographs for a visual reference. The carvings are a little delicate but mostly all in tact and the original gilding has a wonderful patina, which has not been ruined by a second re-gilding process. The shaped white Carrera marble top is of fine quality and has no flaws, but it is unclear if it is original to the table. The whole is sturdy and can be used quite happily as is, using the three metal brackets for affixing to a wall. She could be put through some restoration if so desired to restore all of the carved elements that are lacking.
