Object Description

From our collection of fine metalwork from the time of Emperor Meiji, (1868-1912) this elegant Japanese Silver and Shakudo vase with multi-metal decoration of birds among foliage, signed Kazuhisa, (artist name, Kogyokusai) along with the mark of the celebrated Ozeki Company

The body of the vase with fine and restrained decoration of Pigeons and Sparrows on the ground among Orchids. A large and detailed Poppy dominates the foreground on the reverse and a Butterfly in Shakudo is rendered in minute detail feeding on one of the blooms. The detail of the decoration on this vase is extraordinary, rendered with a mastery of coloured alloys not often seen in contempory works. The ground is a Satin sheen as opposed to a mirror finish silver. This allows the details of the design to take on a softer, more painterly feel.

The neck of the vase is a simple, but impactful dark Black, almost Blue Shakudo.
