Object Description
From our collection of Japanese Meiji-era (1868-1912) ceramics, this fun pair of miniature bottle-form Satsuma vases signed by the artist, Meizan.
The necks of the vases painted with interlinking geometric patterns inspired by Kimono designs whilst the bodies show a continuous scene of groups of boys on shallow boats. The children taking part in various leisurely activities such as playing musical instruments, dancing, studying, exchanging gifts or taking part in games. This is likely inspired by the boys festival (now children’s day) which used to take place in Japan. The children’s curious hair style resembles the Chinese karako children, who are seen as lucky in Japanese culture.
Signed Meizan to the underside. Some minor loss of paint, commensurate with age.
