Object Description

A fine large antique silver Charles II period lidded tankard made in London in 1684 by Osmond Strickland. The tankard has an upright scroll thumbpiece and is plain and unengraved except for some small initials F C underneath. The tankard is of large capacity and will take 3.5 UK pints of beer. It is in good condition with a nice patina with just four small indentations on the top of the handle where the thumbpiece has rested for over 300 years. It is very clearly hallmarked on the body and lid and has the makers mark struck low on the handle which is a nice touch. The mark OS with a mullet has been identified as Osmond Strickland by David Mitchell in his recent book – so many makers before 1697 are unknown so this is a nice feature. Dimension 12.5 cm to top of thumbpiece, Weight 29.9 troy oz, 931 grams,
