From our collection of Japanese metalwork of the Meiji-era, (1868-1912), this delightful Bronze Okimono depicting a family of Sparrows feasting on a rice sheaf.
One Sparrow stands on top of the harvested crop, keeping look out while another emerges from the bundle and a third stands at the bottom with a mouthful of tasty rice.
The rice sheaf has been made using the Mitsuro Hikime (lost wax) technique.
Mitsuro Hikime is an ancient Japanese art form used to create jewellery and sculpture. The process involves warming and then repeatedly pulling, folding and stretching organic wax to create intricate textures and patterns. It is then shaped by hand to form unique striations before being cast into metal.
The Okimono measures 27cm in height and stands on an original purpose-made wood stand.
