Object Description

The very decorative column, well painted to imitate Sienna marble, the whole with fluted and marbleised decoration on a moulded base with banded decoration, survives from the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

This type of column would be best utilised for busts, urns and statuary with it being particularly suited to neoclassical pieces, and metallic or stoneware items.

Shades of Sir John Soane, the grand tour and all that is imposing and decidedly important.

Object Condition

The column is in fair to good overall order, it has suffered knocks and scuffing and overall it remains in fairly good decorative condition, pleasing in that it has not been restored in any way. There is a crack to the centre running through the middle which doesn’t appear to have affected the stability of the piece. The base is a separate entity to the column but is sturdy.
