Object Description

The fine quality early eighteenth century chest in walnut with oak linings and sides, of superior colour, having three feather banded graduated drawers, under a quarter veneered moulded top, the drawers bearing period brass chased handles and escutcheons, the carcass on bracket feet, surviving from Queen Anne period England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

Queen Anne furniture ushered in light, curvy and dainty furniture being a dramatic change from the heavy masculine furniture of styles past with the main choice of wood very much being walnut. It is relatively unusual to find a Queen Anne chest having just the three long drawers, most having two short drawers above, and so its simplicity and proportions in this regard makes it an attractive proposition.

An authentic and beautiful piece of English period furniture with a beautifully evocative colour.

Object Condition

The chest shows some rather attractive wear and tear with scuffing commensurate with its age, the drawers all running smoothly and the carcass structurally sound. The handles are possibly original and the feet may have been altered at a later stage. There is a small amount of old worm to the top right corner and a little to the feet but it is small and not of any threat, being treated and masked. The front and paneled sides both show a healthy patination and beautiful character to the woods. This chest has been well used and loved for centuries. We have given her an oil and wax and the colour is superb.
