The Baroque period originated in Italy in the 17th century and flourished across Europe embracing painting, sculpture, architecture, the decorative arts and in the 18th century music as well. The Italian ‘peak’ of Baroque can be seen in the many churches of the period. The elegant marble vase and cover was probably intended for such a building and could have been positioned around a ‘high altar’ or ‘niche’.
