Object Description

A Fine George IV Period Breakfast Table, Stamped by the Maker, Gillows of Lancaster, c.1825 Of rectangular form with rounded corners and veneered throughout in Brazilian rosewood of the finest colour and figure. The edge of the table top with a band of wide, overscale gadrooning and on the lower frieze a fine reel moulding. The stem of the table with lotus carved capital, a band of gadrooning and four cabriole legs with extensive leaf carved detailing to the knees, terminating in reverse scroll or knurled feet. The Gillows stamp is on the top of the saddle.

Interestingly breakfast tables of this period do not feature in Dr Susan Stuart’s Gillows monograph but other pieces in related patterns, many of them stamped with the firm’s mark, have appeared on the art market over the years. A fine dining table attributed to the firm, and in a very similar pattern, was made for Nidd Hall in Harrogate and sold at Sotheby’s in 2008. A games table with remarkably similar legs but with an octagonal stem was sold at Mallams in 2007 and a D-shaped card table was sold at Dreweatts in 2004. A writing table of very different design but similar feeling, attributed to the firm, is in the National Trust collection at Speke Hall
