Object Description
From our collection of antique Japanese ceramics, this delightful and beautifully painted Meiji-era (1868-1912) Satsuma earthenware pottery Koro signed Yozan.
The pierced cover of the Koro with depictions of Benten (One of the Seven Lucky Gods) sitting on a larger Lion Dog. Next to her is the Courtesan Eguchi (a legendary figure from Japanese mythology) sitting on an Elephant.
The shoulder of the cover is decorated with finely painted Lion Dogs playing among waves.
On the body of the Koro, three large rectangular panels depict Noble men, women and children studying scrolls, playing and listening to music and playing games. Between each panel a cartouche, each with a beautifully painted Dragon.
On the lower section of the main body of the Koro a mille-fleur belt with cascades of Wisteria leading to fine Geometric patterns and Kimono silk designs.
