Object Description
From our collection of Japanese ceramics from the Meiji-era, this finely painted Satsuma box, standing on three feet and depicting the famous Nikko Shrine of Tochigi Prefecture.
The Temple is set in a misty mountainous forest and small figures can be seen making their pilgrimage to the location which still stands today and is one of 25 Unesco Heritage Sites found across Japan.
Around the outside of the box, a long procession of Warriors, Signalmen and Noble men make their way to the Temple.
On the inside of the cover, a pretty Scroll is attached to a blossoming Cherry Blossom tree and inside the main body of the box a group of young ladies are seated in a pavilion playing musical instruments.
