Object Description

Constructed in Padouk, extensively carved, the platform base having tripod carved scrolled feet, and above, grotesque masks in the neo-renaissance manner: the central column carved and pierced, with foliates and three gargoyle figures, and the hexagonal gently everted box with a fitted interior and lifting hinged top, with six foliate carved reserves, with gadroon edging, surmounted by a knopped finial. Bearing the makers ivory label, inscribed ‘J.D. Madras’. Madras City, Circa 1840.
