Object Description

From our collection of Japanese Meiji-era (1868-1912) fine metalwork, this charming pair of multi-patinated Bronze vases with decorations of Owls and the Moon.

The vases, patinated with Silver, Gold, Shakudo and Copper consist of unusual panels bordered by flaying Cranes with elongated, wings. The panels depicting Owls among Prunus blossoms looking at the moon. On the reverse of each vase a riverside landscape scene with a lone fishing boat, mountains in the background and stylised Pine trees in the foreground.

The panels are on a textured cross hatched ground with a multi-patinated vine around the neck.

Both vases signed Atsuyoshi Miyabe.

Object History

Miyabe Atsuyoshi

Miyabe Atsuyoshi is a revered artist who lived in Kyoto. He was a Master Bronze Smith and exhibited his wares domestically and internationally at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Red Crowned Crane:

In Japan the red crowned crane is a much-revered bird. It is a symbol of strength, good fortune and longevity. The Crane was thought to live for 1.000 years. In reality, in captivity, Red Crowned Cranes have been known to live for 75 years making it one of the longest lived birds.

The Red Crowned Crane is currently endangered due to loss of it’s wetland habitat with less than 2000 individuals in the wild, about 950 of these being in Japan.

The Owl:

In Japan, the Owl is a symbol of good fortune and luck. Due to the Japanese word for owl (Fukuro) being similar to the one for luck. It is also often used as a suffix for boys names. Owl charms are popular gifts in Japan and are often given to students graduating.

There is a Yokai (spirit) known as Tatarimokke said to be the spirit of a dead child that takes the form of an Owl and haunts the home of its family.

Moon:

The Moon is the subject of much mythology in Japan. It’s depiction can symbolize national well-being (From Shinto beliefs) or inner enlightenment (Buddhist beliefs)
