Object Description

Constructed from Carrara marble with mercury gilded mounts, the vases are supported on square bases with laurel-wreathed socles; the marble ovoid bodies with ormolu foliate twinned handles and floral festooning; each candelabrum issuing a gilded bouquet of flowers with three candleholders.

A nearly identical model appears in the daybooks of the famous l’Escalier de Cristal, described as “Candelabres vase marbre / Lumières fleur” supplied by Hazart. Orders for the candelabra include the Rothschild family and the Rockefellers.

Object Literature

Eugène Hazart of Paris (1838-1891)

Hazart was a Parisian bronzier, listed as a member of the ‘Réunion des fabricants de bronze’ with his address at 122 rue Vieille-du-Temple from 1843, later moving to 12 rue St-Gilles in 1856, and finally at no.16 in 1864. He is listed as a supplier to ‘l’Escalier de Cristal’ in the second half of the 19th century, a true testament to the quality of Hazart’s craftsmanship.
